Are you looking for great professional photography to make your hats stand out?

At The Portrait Kitchen, we love doing millinery photography. Are you ready to have your hats shown at their best?

Our goal is to make a milliner’s hats stand out in all their glory. Wherever you are in the world we can photograph your hats.

We are not wedding photographer’s or landscape photographer’s. We are hat photographer’s. We shoot in a clean and uncluttered style to reduce visual distraction and draw focus to your art. We want to make sure your hats and head-wear look their best, enabling your clients to quickly visualise how a hat looks on them.

We would liken our work more to product photography rather than portraiture because the main subjects are your hats. But we do use models and proven portraiture techniques to humanise hats, thus creating an emotional connection to make your hats more desirable.

By providing high quality photography that uses either a hat stand or professional model we enable our millinery clients to not only celebrate their work but also produce images for impactful marketing on their websites, online store and social media channels.

Our studio is in our large kitchen, hence our name. We use professional studio lighting, colour correction and neutral backgrounds with colours that match your hats.

We always work with experienced models and actors to showcase your hats. Using a model who knows how to position their head, work their posture and be relaxed in front of the camera creates great millinery shots.

So, if you want images beyond the hatstand then find out more below.

What do I get?

  • A 2 hour photo session, using studio lighting and a selection of our solid colour backdrops.
  • Photoshoot designed around what you want to achieve.
  • One experienced millinery model (male or female).
  • Typically, a minimum of 10-20 images per hat, lightly edited and delivered to you for download via a secure web gallery within five working days. We focus on quality not quantity with our images.
  • Full usage rights (with accreditation).
  • We are also graphic designers so for a small additional charge we can retouch your images beyond our ‘clean up’ edits that come as standard.

How much does it cost?

We charge £250 for 2 hours of shoot time hour including a model. This fee covers up to 5 hats.

All images will be edited then sent to you via a secure online folder for review.

If you want more detailed image retouching on any specific photos (perhaps for an editorial feature) we can quote you for that.

Our fee with a breakdown can be found here.

How much does it cost if I want my hats photographed on a hat stand rather than a model?

For hats photographed on stands we charge £30 per hat (excluding delivery costs). You can have as many hats photographed as you like. If you want to use your own stands then include them in your delivery.

Hats are photographed, edited and then sent to you for review and usage. We shoot hats from multiple angles so your buyer can see the whole creation as well as how it it attaches to the head. We can also remove things like elastic using Photoshop if you want that.

Do you photograph hats for milliners who are not in the UK?

Yes we do. We can shoot your hats no matter where you are in the world.

As well as the UK we have clients in Europe and the USA who courier hats to us to be photographed. We have also developed an e-shoot or remote photo shoot option with one of Britain’s top models to ensure that no-one is put at risk during lockdown.

And with Zoom you can dial into your shoot, see your images as they are shot in real time and provide creative input on positioning and placement. Effectively you are at the shoot, virtually.

What milliners say about The Portrait Kitchen

Notes by Donna Hartley Millinery

The Portrait Kitchen is a great way for us to get professional photos of our hats taken.  The professionalism of Jon and Anjee is superb. They project managed the whole shoot for us. We have a way we want things done and both Jon & Anjee delivered on that brilliantly. Milliners around the world can take advantage of this service however much we want to keep these gems a secret.

Jon shot some of the most beautiful and striking images I have seen of my hats.  We talked on the phone before the shoot and he sent me photographs of a good selection of models.  Those we chose were all lovely and highly professional.  I decided to use a make up artist and the lady Jon introduced me to was incredibly talented and was a real asset to the shoot.

We had a busy but relaxed and laughter-filled afternoon with lots of tea and cake, and everyone was delighted with the end results.

'Velvet Rose' by Gemma Holley Millinery

“Anjee and Jon have a great set up that they have built in their large kitchen. It is so homely and welcoming. There is none of the fuss and formality of a large photo studio. It feels more like you are visiting friends.

Anjee is always on hand to help keep the show on the road with the models and MUA and I was encouraged to take an active part in the styling so I got exactly what I wanted.

Jon really understands how to use light with his photography to make so my hats stood out.

If you want to take your millinery to the next level with magazine quality images that you can then use for marketing I can’t recommend Jon and Anjee highly enough.”

Margaret Woodliff Wright Millinery
Jon and Anjee shot product style images of several of my millinery pieces in September 2020.
At The Portrait Kitchen, by their characteristic passionate attention to detail, Jon and Anjee offer a wrap-around photographic service creating stunning portrait style images which highlight and enhance the creativity of a milliner’s work. One of Jon’s specialities is to create drama, using contrast back drops to highlight, in my case, millinery and through his clever use of lighting he appears to almost effortlessly create images that bring your product to life.
Jon edits the images he shoots and then provides a WeTransfer file of the images, in the size you require. His flexible friendly operation is characterised by huge professionalism and dedication to the his art of photography.
Thank you both so much.
