Portraiture is about emotional connection

I was sat on the train returning from work yesterday, listening to music and letting my mind drift about why I like doing portraiture.

It is about creating an emotional connection between the sitter and the viewer.

Art is and always has been about emotional connection. This is why some of us may prefer Rembrandt to Kandinsky. We connect emotionally to a work of art or we don’t.

Portraiture is art.

So the challenge for me in portraiture is to seek, find and capture the emotion within a sitter that enables the viewer to connect.
